One weekday I sat behind my desk to do some work in my room. I lowered my chair as I always do because good posture is important to me. My email inbox was nice and busy but one email stood out to me. It was a mail from a photo book company I usually use. They send an email about 4 times a week. I looked at the topic of the email and moved on to something else. It wasn’t until I saw another email from the same company that something hit me. I have a newsletter for my clothing business, Zedi and I’m always afraid of sending out emails. Generally I don’t really put myself out there.

Why am I afraid

My fear is mostly because I don’t want my customers and potential customers to think the brand is too ‘salesy’ or ‘spammy’ and then unsubscribe. I send emails out about once every other month on a good run! For a fashion brand this is like not having a newsletter at all. It’s really embarrassing. At this point I have decided to face my fears and draft a number of emails to send once a week. This year I plan to put myself out there a lot! I will closely watch to see how many people unsubscribe and see if my fears are anyway justified. The plan is to share fun fashion tips, stories of our business and cool discounts and deals we offer. My plans going forward

This fear of being too ‘salesy’ doesn’t only appear with newsletters but everything marketing tends to freak me out a little. I know very well the days of “good products sell by themselves” are long gone in this busy and distracting world. The question is now how much is too much? Since I don’t have the answer all I can do is push myself to test. From now onwards we will advertise more and see the response and continue pushing till our audience says, “whoa slow down”. I know I am stepping out of my comfort zone but as the saying goes success comes when you step out of your comfort zone. Wish me luck!
